OUR HOME CANVAS

Here are ALL of the details of our new custom home’s canvas!
All of these different components work together to create the underlying vibe of the home.

You’ll be getting the scoop on our wood floors, our paint colors, interior doors, door hardware, windows, our front door, stair railing and blinds.

Our Home

Our custom built home is 3500 sq. ft., it is a story and a half with four bedrooms and three and a half baths. The Master is on the main level, along with two other bedrooms. The upstairs has a bedroom, a full bathroom, a loft, and a bonus room.

Floors

Our home’s floors are mostly wood, with the exception of the laundry room and the full bathrooms, which are tile. The main reason for this is that carpet tends to hold dust and have high off-gassing of VOCS (volatile organic compounds).

I had hopes for a light grain engineered wood floor and the wire scraped look, with a vintage appearance and wide planked boards. More importantly, I was on the search for one lot (which means the same wood batch) of over 3500 sq. ft. The reason you want to get all of your wood from the same lot, is that you want the wood to have the same color and undertones.

Sometimes you just have to laugh at what life throws at you. I found the wood floors and they were in Texas. We strongly considered having my husband Todd drive a U-Haul truck to Texas and back with our wood floors. Fortunately my brother-in-law is in the trucking industry and helped us jump on a load that was heading to the Midwest.
Did we get lucky, or what!?!

The day that the delivery freight truck pulled up, I laughed at the idea of Todd U-hauling even half of that wood load.

More about our “Texas” Floors …. they are an engineered wood floor by Casabella, the style is Valley Stream, and the color is Richmond. The species is Oak and the dimensions are 1/2 thickness by 7 1/2 in width.

Design TIP: “Engineered Wood” means that the top of the floor is real wood and the undermount is a manufactured particle board. Depending on the thickness and the species of the wood, “engineered wood” could be resurfaced and re-stained a couple of times.

Windows

All of our homes windows are the Anderson E Series with a black exterior and interior. The bedrooms have black exterior and white interior to keep the bedroom spaces bright and neutral for individual decor taste.

Paint

A good painter along with good paint is simply the best! Our main walls are Sherwin Williams Snowbound, in Eggshell (SW7004). The trim is in Sherwin Williams Extra White, in Semi Gloss (SW 7006). All of the areas where we have wainscot, pencil moulding, and built-in’s are in SW Snowbound (SW7004) in a high gloss finish.

Stair Railing

This stair railing was created by a local rod iron company. I drew the design I was hoping for and the company furnished it creating a modern ornamental railing that matched exactly. The railing is sturdy with no maintenance and is a scene stealer in our open concept home!

Front Door

The front door you choose is the first opportunity to make an impression upon your guests. I chose a classic craft Mahogany Fiberglass Double door. The grandeous look of the double doors along with the larger area of glass is exactly what I wanted.

Design TIP: A front door that is made from a “Fiberglass” material will last longer and be more durable than a wood door. The fiberglass door will not shrink and swell with changes in the weather.

Interior Door

There are great options to choose for your interior doors. Interior door styles have come along way. The door style that fit with our design style was the two panel flat shaker all wood door.
The lines and edges of this door is simple and modern.

I love the Pinterest trend where interior doors of homes are painted in the Scherwin Williams color Tricorn black.

Are you thinking about painting your interior doors Tricorn Black???
Trust me … YOU WILL LOVE IT! I painted the interior doors Sherwin Williams Tricorn Black (SW6258) in a satin sheen. The doors look great!!!

The bedroom doors on the main floor I painted Sherwin Williams Extra White in Semi Gloss (SW 7006). I wanted to keep the bedroom spaces bright and neutral for individual decor taste.

Door Hardware

This post contains affiliate links. This means I may earn a commission should you chose make a purchase using my link. It’s okay – I love all of these products anyways, and you will too!

The Satin Brass Emtek Hardware looks so sharp on the painted Tricorn Black doors. The doors that are painted Extra White have the Emtek Knobs in Flat Black. Emtek even makes the Black Matte Tubular locks for pocket doors.

Blinds

All of the blinds in our home are Zebra blinds and are by Allure. White blinds for all of the bedrooms and for the front windows of the home keep everything looking uniform. I used black upstairs and in the Parlor room. I control the blinds by a remote, which makes them easy to open and close.

That should cover everything!!! Check out the Home Tour Reveal Posts for the details on each room. I hope you liked Our Home Canvas and maybe even got some ideas for your own remodel, build, or for your clients.

Wishing you luck on your journey to living simply!
