STYLE A CHARMING GUEST ROOM YOUR VISITORS WILL LOVE

Summer is the time when most families travel, so if and when you have visitors, you’ll want to style a charming guest room your visitors will love. Over the years our family has been the host and the guests, and we always love returning to those homes where we felt a warm welcome and noticed some extra attention made to the guest room.

This space is a design I did for a client who wanted help with a guest room. The goal was that it would be inviting, offer a warm welcome, and be a charming guest room her visitors would love.

BED & BEDDING

A cozy bed is by far the most important detail to consider when you style a charming guest room your visitors will love. If you have an old mattress with springs, bumps, and lumps, it might be time to invest in a new one. Most mattresses today do not use box springs and sit directly on a platform style bed. Trust me, you do not need a box spring to make a bed comfortable. Unlike old beds, mattresses today are made with supporting layers of materials like cotton, wool, and latex.

Bedding and linens are what help make a bed cozy. Having a mattress protector is always a wise idea, in the case that something is spilled, or a younger guest has an unexpected situation. My favorite mattress protector is from Green Mattress, and Providing a clean extra set of sheets in the bedroom closet is another clever tip.

Be sure to use four standard or queen pillows on a queen size bed. You want to use both pillow protectors and pillow cases. I am a huge fan of duvet covers and inserts because you can remove the duvet cover and wash it easily between guests. Some comforters are just to big and bulky and don’t fit in standard washing machines therefore they do not wash well.

A COMFY CHAIR

Provide a chair where your guest can relax. It is nice to have a space other than the bed for your guests to kick their feet up or get some work done as a temporary workspace. The chair purchased for this client’s guest room was from Target, finding something economical, practical, and comfy was most important with this project. To style a charming guest room your visitors will love, consider adding a bolster or extra back pillow and side table creates a cozy look that is inviting and comfortable.

NIGHTSTANDS

To style a charming guest room your visitors will love, add a nightstand on each side of the bed. These nightstands are from Pottery Barn and happen to be phone charger friendly. Add lamps, a clock, and small decor or mementos that make your guests feel at home.

Designer Tip – Nightstands do not have to match the bed frame or the dresser. You can create a beautiful eclectic guest room your visitors will love by bringing different pieces into a space. You don’t want your space to look like a furniture show room.

If you are able to add pendant lights above your nightstands as seen in my Hello Eve Adams Design blog, Primary Bedroom Design, than I highly recommend it. It is a beautiful and functional design look that you won’t regret.

A PLACE FOR CLOTHES & TOWELS

Whether you create space in a closet with empty hangers for your guests or a dresser of drawers, your visitors will feel more at home when they aren’t living out of their suit cases. If you want to add that extra special touch and make your visitors feel like royalty, consider providing fluffy robes and slippers to help add detail to style a charming guest room your visitors will love.

A basket filled with clean bath towels is a sure way to make your guests feel right at home and appreciate all you’ve done to host them.

WALL ART & A MIRROR

Choose paint and wall art that is calming and serene. You want your vistors to feel relaxed and happy, not anxious and overwhelmed. The colors of nature can be calming, be sure your wall paint and wall art is shades of blues, greens, and neutrals and stay away from paint and wall art with the colors red, purple, and black.

A mirror is a must have when styling a guest room. Everyone needs to check their make-up or fit, or have an extra place to get ready if the bathroom is occupied.

BOOKS, BLANKETS, AND GREENERY

The final items that you will want to include when you style a charming guest room your visitors will love are all the things that make a room cozy. An extra blanket in a basket, draped on the back of a chair, or at the end of the bed will always be used. Be sure that they are clean and smell fresh because there’s nothing worse than old musty smelling blankets. A stack of reading material is a nice addition to any guest room, books are practical decor. Adding a living plant or a faux plant will bring a bit of nature indoors and give the guest room that organic feel.
