A MODERN HEARTH ROOM’S – 5 MUST HAVE’S!

Our home’s Modern Hearth Room is my favorite place to sit on a cold winter day. The sun shines in and the fireplace keeps me toasty. Where do you go to cozy up on a cold winter day? Whether you are adding a modern hearth room space to your home or doing a new construction build, here are a Modern Hearth Room’s – 5 must have’s!

A FOCAL POINT

When creating a Modern Hearth Room, consider having a focal point. The fireplace is a focal point in this room. If you have a fireplace – great, but if you don’t consider purchasing an electric freestanding fireplace to create a similar aesthetic. There are so many styles, and most today have sleek design appeal.

Other focal point ideas, could be an accent wall, using paint, texture, wallpaper, or adding brick or stone. This focal point wall has a stacked thin ledger marble tile in the color Arctic White and has a subtle sparkle to it. The fireplace shown here is a linear modern vent free gas fireplace by Heat & Glo. Together the fireplace, stone, and accent wall painted black provides a nice focal point for the multi functional furniture design.

The focal wall area around the fireplace is painted SW 6258 Tricorn Black. If you follow my designs, you probably know this color is my favorite go-to black paint color. Using this deep dark color on the wall made the fireplace pop and gave this Modern Hearth Room depth and contrast.

THE CHANDELIER

As a designer, I think every room should have a beautiful light. The fluted glass makes this chandelier sparkle at night. Finding a chandelier that elevates the space and makes it more dramatic and can elevate the look of a hearth room.

Design Tip: If you want ambient lighting in a room, choose valance lighting that faces up towards the ceiling or that washes the wall with light rays. Having your lights on a dimmer switch can also help create moods and set the tone of a room.

VERSATILE FURNITURE

I’m sure you will agree … Swivel chairs are amazing and are a go-to furniture staple for a Modern Hearth Room plan. Swivel chairs are nice for conversations and for TV watching. These swivel chairs are a bold black velvet fabric, accented with an aged brass detail on the base.  These chairs are so comfy and have been a versatile purchase for this modern space.

The drum coffee table is the Graydon Faux Shagreen plinth round coffee table from Restoration Hardware. Shagreen is a type of raw hide consisting of rough untanned skin of sea animals. It has a pebbly texture.

Design Tip: Like the look of Shagreen, but love sea animals like me? Look for Faux Shagreen.

THE RUG

Rugs are perfect for a Modern Hearth Room because they add a layer of cozy to the space. The rug shown is an 8 ft. round washable rug from Ruggable called Verena Dark Wood. I get a lot of questions about Ruggable rugs. I have many of them in all different sizes. They typically come out in good shape and are easy to place back down. I would suggest trying one if you have pets that shed or kids that spill.

Modern Hearth Room Decor Ideas

A BAR CART

Using a smaller, versatile furniture piece like a bar cart is a great way to incorporate decor and shelving that is perfect for a Modern Hearth Room. The bar cart shown was purchased at Wayfair and you can check out my blog How to Style A Bar Cart to get more details on how to create a stunning bar cart. Bar carts are versatile and fun options to use in decor.  I also think of them as a blank canvas to create so many different looks and a unique way to display anything you want to show off. My bar cart today holds some bottles of spirits, my favorite cocktail glasses, and a variety of succulents, however, I change it often to go with the purpose of the space.

GREEN PLANTS

Consider using a variety of green plants in your Modern Hearth Room. Greenery can be used for inexpensive decor but also can be moved from room to room for versatility. Bringing several fresh green plants indoors creates an organic, cozy vibe and brings you closer to nature.

THE WINDOW TREATMENTS

When planning your Modern Hearth Room, keep the light coming in but the cold out. A modern zebra blind in black is shown here to keep the flow of the contrast (black and white).  These blinds are programmed on a remote and are easy to control. When these blinds are up, the sun lights up the room and makes the plants, and my French Bulldog, happy.

How do you stay warm throughout the winter months?
