THE (CHIC!) ECO- FRIENDLY KITCHEN

Did you happen to see the Netflix Movie, Don’t Look Up? The one with Leonardo DiCaprio and Jennifer Lawrence. Were you wondering if it was truly about an asteroid hitting planet earth or maybe it had some hidden symbolic meaning? I’m not going to give it away but definitely check it out!

Check out these other documentaries too – Our Planet, Kiss The Ground and An Inconvenient Truth. They are all great and informative. BUT… What’s the next step? Here are some simple things you can do to make your kitchen eco friendly and there’s no better time to start than today.

Can only one person make a change in helping the climate crisis in this big wide world?

YES!!!

It’s called the ripple effect. Be aware, start small and be consistent and change can happen.

The best place to start is to choose one room in your own home… let’s start with the kitchen.

RE-USE IT

Swap out ziploc bags for fun unique new food storage on the go.

My kids love this Bento Box Lunch Box. Follow my social feed for ideas and Make Lunch For My Kids short reels. Here are some other eco-friendly lunch boxes.

FREEZE IT

Holy food prices!!!! Groceries are quite expensive these days and going out to eat is more costly than ever. Food waste is at all time high too. Sadly, I might be the only person in my family who gets excited for left overs. I feel horrible throwing away perfectly good food that no one else wants to eat or that I have already ate for five days in a row.

Can you relate?

Some quick tips to save on waste and spending.

Instead of putting leftovers in the fridge to sit until eventually getting tossed, freeze them immediately and label with contents and date. In a few weeks pull it out and your family thinks it’s a new meal. Does your fresh fruit get mushy and tossed out? Chop it and freeze in small containers for smoothies and baking. Store fruits like peaches and plums in empty egg cartons and it will last much longer. Other ideas are to cook smaller portions, and share extras with neighbors or friends.

REPLACE

Ditch your old stained plastic containers with durable, safe, glass options. Mason jars are practical and reasonably priced.

Instead of “paper or plastic”, try these durable reusable totes. Keep them in your trunk so you are always ready to do your part. I like the change I see at stores like Aldi and Whole Foods where you bring your own bags or pay a small fee.

Try incorporating more natural reclaimed woods into your eco friendly kitchen. Again switching out your plastics for more earth friendly and healthier options. I love this wooden cooking utensil set.

COMPOSTING ANYONE?

Believe it or not composting is becoming more popular with so many modern and practical composters to choose from. Composting is on the verge of being a hobby, or is it already?

Composters certainly know there compost and ream the benefits in more ways than one. Less waste and beautiful gardens and flower beds. Checkout these unique compost bins for your kitchen.

UNPLUG

Small appliances that are not being used can be unplugged. Those toasters, coffee makers, blenders, juicers, Insta Pots, and toaster ovens are all using electricity when they are plugged into an outlet, yes… even when they are not turned on. So go ahead an unplug them and save some of earth’s energy and your money.

These are simple ideas that will make a small difference and contribute to that ripple effect in creating big change for our earth and environment. Doing one or two of these ideas can make a difference over time. Helping with your own personal carbon footprint is key.
